DIY Natural Hair Growth Oil: Let’s Add Some Spice

Updated: Nov 19, 2024

I finally reached mid-back length with my 4C natural hair after a million years 😢, and I did it by creating my own growth oil and using it consistently alongside good hair care practices over the past year! Now, I’m making a customized batch for my nieces, addressing their scalp issues and supporting thicker, healthier hair growth. Today we’re looking at essential oils for scalp stimulation! We talked about the base oil last week, so if you haven’t gone through my previous post, please do so to catch up, so you can understand the basics.

Adding Essential Oils: The Spice of Your Growth Oil Recipe

Just as spices can transform a simple baking recipe, essential oils can transform your growth oil… and though they are powerhouses, they are only needed in small quantities. Essential oils help to stimulate your scalp for your natural hair to grow by targeting specific scalp and hair needs. Essential oils work wonders by enhancing circulation, soothing irritation, and supporting growth. Choosing the right one is like choosing spices to match the flavor profile of a pastry with each oil having its unique property.

Stimulating Essential Oils: The Power Players

Think of essential oils like cinnamon or ginger in baking: bold, concentrated, and effective in small amounts. Just a drop or two can go a long way! Here are a few powerful options:

Tea Tree Oil: This powerhouse is known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties, which can help keep the scalp clean and flake-free, setting a healthy foundation for growth.

Rosemary Oil: Known for its stimulating qualities, rosemary oil improves blood circulation to the scalp, supporting hair strength and health.

Ginger Oil: Its cooling sensation is both refreshing and stimulating. Peppermint oil promotes blood flow to the scalp, which can encourage growth over time.

  • Vitamin E Oil: While it is not an essential oil, vitamin e is very important as it serves as an antioxidant, ensuring that your oil does not go rancid rapidly while also nourishing the scalp.

Dilution is Key: How Much to Use?

Essential oils are potent, so it’s crucial to dilute them to avoid irritation. Start with a 1–2% dilution in your growth oil base. Think of this step as using vanilla extract in baking—just a small amount enhances the overall recipe without overwhelming it. Here’s a simple guideline:

1% dilution: For every 100 ml of carrier oil, add 1 ml (about 20 drops) of essential oil.

2% dilution: For every 100 ml of carrier oil, add 2 ml (about 40 drops) of essential oil.

The Final Blend: Your Growth Oil’s ‘Spice Mix’

Once you’ve chosen your essential oils and balanced the ratios, blend them with your base oil. Just like mixing spices into a recipe, this step enhances your growth oil’s effectiveness, catering to your unique scalp and hair needs.
